What is Reiki Level 2 (Okuden)?

Reiki Level 2 is the second of three levels in Usui Reiki, called Okuden in Japanese and Second Degree in English. It is the level for working with other people. You receive the second attunement and three symbols, learn to give a full session to someone else and learn to send Reiki to a person who is not in the room.

You need Reiki Level 1 first, then at least three months of daily practice. The training is two days at the centre, 5 hours a day with a vegetarian lunch break, taught by Maa Nisha Kabir to a small group or one to one.

Reiki Level 2 syllabus

Four parts, covered over the two days.

The second attunement

Given on the first training day, in the same short seated ceremony as Level 1: about 15 minutes, eyes closed, while Maa Nisha works with breath and symbols. As before, most people notice little during it.

The three symbols

Level 2 introduces three symbols. You learn to draw each one, what it is used for and when to use it in a session. You then use them in practice sessions with Maa Nisha watching.

Distance practice

With the symbols the practice no longer needs touch. You learn to send Reiki to a person who is not in the room, and you practise it before you leave.

Running a session for someone else

How to structure a full session from the first conversation to the close, how to look after the person afterwards and how to work with clients ethically.

Before you book Reiki Level 2

Three months of Level 1 practice

Level 2 is taught at least three months after Level 1, once your daily practice has settled. That is why Level 1 and Level 2 are never on the same trip.

Level 1 with another teacher

If you took Level 1 somewhere else, tell us when you enquire. Maa Nisha will ask about your training and your practice since then before a date is agreed.

A Reiki Level 2 training day

Both days follow the same plan as Level 1. The centre is open Sunday to Friday, 6:00am to 8:00pm, and closed on Saturday. You stay where you like and come in each day.

  1. Arrival

    Welcome

On the first morning you fill in a short form over herbal tea and meet Maa Nisha.

  2. Morning

    Attunement and symbols

The second attunement on the first morning, then the three symbols and how each is used.

  3. Lunch

    Vegetarian lunch

Cooked in the centre kitchen and included on both days.

  4. Afternoon

    Full sessions and distance practice

You give and receive full sessions with the other students, and practise sending Reiki at a distance.

  5. Day two

    Client practice and certificate

More supervised sessions, questions about working with clients, and your Level 2 certificate.

After Reiki Level 2

Three months of daily practice

Back home, keep practising two to three hours a day for three months. Questions during that time can go to us by email.

Charging for sessions

After Level 2 you are trained to work with other people. Whether you charge is up to you and depends on local rules. Some countries ask for registration or insurance for hands-on work, so check before you start. Reiki is not medical treatment, and your clients should keep to their doctor's care.

When you can take Master Level

The Reiki Master training ($400, 4 days) is taken at least nine months after Level 2, if you have kept up the practice. Many students come back after a year or two.

Level 1 students ready for the next step

You have practised Level 1 every day for at least three months and want to treat other people, not only yourself.

Yoga teachers and massage therapists

If you already work with clients, Level 2 lets you offer Reiki alongside what you do now.

People who want distance practice

Level 2 is where you learn to send Reiki to someone who is not with you.

Your own practice

Many students take Level 2 for themselves and never work with clients. That is fine.
