What does a weekend yoga retreat near Kathmandu actually involve?

A weekend retreat is a 2 to 3 day all-inclusive programme held in a quiet property in the Kathmandu Valley foothills, approximately 45 minutes from the central tourist district. You stay at the property, eat sattvic vegetarian meals, practise yoga and meditation twice daily, receive one Tibetan singing bowl sound healing session, and spend time outdoors in the forest near the Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park.

We chose the location deliberately. The Kathmandu Valley itself can be loud, polluted and intense. Stepping just a few kilometres north toward the forest changes the air quality, the noise level, and the quality of attention that becomes possible. Practitioners who have lived in central Kathmandu for years often comment that they forgot what silence felt like until the first night of a weekend retreat. That is the point of the format.

The teaching follows the same Himalayan tradition used throughout Jivan Parivartan: classical Hatha and Ashtanga yoga, pranayama, meditation grounded in the Yoga Sutras, and a Tibetan singing bowl sound bath on one of the days. There is no fitness yoga, no influencer poses, no rush. The faculty rotates across weekends but typically includes Yogi Awdaitmani for the asana work and Swami Anish or Maa Nisha Kabir for meditation and sound work.

You leave on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning carrying something the city had not been letting you carry: a slower breath, a settled gut, a couple of nights of real sleep, and a body that remembers how to be quiet.

Yes. Sessions are taught at multiple levels and modifications are offered throughout. The meditation is guided and requires no prior experience. The sound healing requires nothing of you at all. If anything, beginners often get more from a weekend retreat than experienced practitioners, because the contrast with normal life is greater.
